ENGINE & COMPONENT DESIGN

  • Bourne HPP have the capability to design and source the custom ‘short run’ manufacture of high-quality components, assemblies, or even complete powertrains. This process involves the use of various tools and methods to ensure the highest quality output.
  • We have experience in sourcing the manufacture of components using a wide range of both standard and exotic materials. This involves careful planning and requirement analysis to select the most suitable materials for each component.
  • We can enhance or develop an existing design or take an outline concept all the way through to manufacture. Alternatively, we can take a detailed specification and design a complete powertrain that complies with a specific set of series regulations….all from a clean sheet of paper [well, a blank computer screen in reality!] This involves a thorough configuration of the design parameters and the environment in which the design will be implemented.
  • We use a combination of motorsport industry standard SolidWorks™ and FEA software to develop our designs. These tools allow us to carry out integration and maintenance of the design elements in a seamless manner.
  • We have the ability to run a full stress analysis before a newly designed component is tested on the dyno or on the track to ensure that both the design and material selection are optimal for each application. This is an integral part of our improvement strategy.
  • Bourne HPP also uses a combination of VX element scan software and CMM measuring equipment to reverse engineer historical vehicle components. This method allows us to recreate components with high precision and accuracy.
  • Whatever your design project might be, Bourne HPP fully recognises the need for data protection, client confidentiality, appropriate security measures, and the utmost discretion to ensure that each customer’s project objectives are never compromised. This is a key part of our management approach.

REVERSE ENGINEERING

  • The rising popularity of historical racing and the inevitable shortage of certain OEM and custom components for some of the older/rarer vehicles has stimulated an increasing demand for reverse-engineered components. This process involves an existing component that is in short supply, no longer available or has been damaged beyond repair or is otherwise unsuitable for use and can be designed/redesigned ‘from scratch’ using only direct physical examination and dimensional measurement of the component and its characteristics and/or the technical assessment of the function it performs – or from period drawings, or specifications where they exist. This method requires careful planning and understanding of the requirements.
  • Bourne HPP’s reverse engineering capabilities extend from designing and producing a ‘one off’ component for a historic race/classic car owner to replace a failed or damaged item that is no longer available on the open market to designing and producing small or large batches of period style components to replace the depleted inventory of a team, professional marque restorer, or a trade parts wholesaler or retailer. This involves a systematic management of the configuration and environment for the implementation of the design.
  • Bourne HPP undertakes that the Intellectual Property of all reverse engineering designs and related project work shall remain with the client. This is an essential part of our process improvement and tool utilization strategy.
  • We can also arrange remanufacturing from original component design drawings or enhance period designs [where permitted by category regulations]. This involves careful integration and maintenance of the design elements.
